This view originated in part from Heidegger and was furthered by the works of Kierkegaard, Bultmann, and later Schweitzer. There are four basic tenets: irrationalism, individuality, freedom, and subjectivity. Reality transcends rationale, the individual is of prime importance and escapes categories, nothing can hinder the ability to choose and views of God cannot have him encroach on that idea, and things can only be known from the perspective of the person knowing the object or idea and the presuppositions they bring with them.
