Sabbath

Set in place by God in Gen 2:3. The Sabbath is the seventh day of the week. It is the end. Our calendar date would be Saturday. Sunday is the first day of the new week. The Sabbath was sanctified because God rested in it. God sanctifies the seventh day in the Decalogue (Exo 20:8-11). In the Jewish calendar, the day started at sunset and went to the next sunset (Gen 1:5). It is also said to be from eve until eve (Lev 23:32). Because the Sabbath belongs to the Lord (Exo 20:10) it also belongs to Christ (Mar 2:28). Jesus kept the Sabbath (Luk 4:16). Keeping God’s commands is a sign we love him and belong to him (Exo 31:13). It is an outward sign of an inward devotion (Eze 20:20). Christ came to fulfill the law and the prophets (Mat 5:17-19). He was the only one who could and did fulfill all requirements of the law. The precise day is not as important as the devotion involved in implementing it (Rom 14:5). Sabbath is for man, not man for the Sabbath (Mar 2:27). Paul kept the Sabbath too (Act 17:2). We can’t speak evil when good is done even if it happens on the Sabbath day (Mar 3:2). Good is done when believers gather in the name of Christ, the word is preached, and souls are saved.
