So the young men who had been spies went in and brought out Rahab and her father and mother and brothers and all who belonged to her. And they brought all her relatives and put them outside the camp of Israel. 24 And they burned the city with fire, and everything in it. Only the silver and gold, and the vessels of bronze and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD. -Joshua 6:23-24
The potter shapes the vessel into something valuable and beautiful. Where the clay is dry, the potter moistens the clay and kneads the water and clay back together to make the clay moldable. Once the vessel retains the shape it was intended to bear, it is complete. It is ready to be a vessel of beauty to be displayed or a vessel of sustenance, full of water or food.
We know very little of Rahab’s life that found her to be in the position of a prostitute. It’s not a job that anyone would claim on purpose like it was a childhood dream to become one. It is the result of experiencing difficulties in life many will never experience. It is usually a job of desperation or only a means to care for one’s household.
For all the dishonor she received from men, she gained honor with the Lord. Though she may be judged for her lack of purity according to the Laws of God, she knew God enough to recognize His people, His Spirit at work, and respond with faithfulness. Which one of us is without blemish? God uses ALL things together for our good. Though we are a marred and battle worn people, God is shaping us into vessels to be used for honor.
